This past weekend we took an end-of-summer trip up to the Bridenbaugh family cabin on Montana’s East Rosebud Lake. We go up for a visit every summer to hang with lifelong friends, breathe the unbeatable Montana mountain air, and do a lot of hiking and paddling.

This year, we combined the last two by taking an expedition up to Slough Lake with some inflatable SUPs on our backs. Crazy? Maybe. Fun? Definitely.

The boards were HEAVY, causing us to take a little longer than usual to reach the lake, which turned out to be shallow and rocky – not great conditions for paddling. We hand-inflated the boards on the bank anyway (sans fins), and maneuvered our way through, hoping to reach a clearer area further out.

Turns out we couldn’t get through the marshy area to the other side, so we ended up carrying the inflated boards further up the trail to a different access point. There, the water was deeper and everyone was able to get out and ride around with a fin.

After the hike and playing around on the boards, we hiked back down with SUP packs on our backs. Much easier on the way down! We’ll definitely be doing it again. Where have you hiked with your iSUP recently? Tell us about it!
